How to use this tile calculator

  1. Enter the length and width of the area you are tiling.
  2. Enter the tile size in inches — a 12×12 tile is exactly 1 sq ft.
  3. Enter how many tiles come in a box.

  5. Adjust the waste percentage if your installer recommends more.
  6. Read the tiles needed, boxes needed and the estimated cost.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra tile should I buy?

Ten percent for a straight layout on a simple rectangle. Add fifteen percent for diagonal or herringbone patterns, and more for rooms with many corners or heavy cutting.

How many 12×12 tiles are in a square foot?

Exactly one — a 12×12 inch tile covers one square foot. A 100 sq ft floor therefore needs at least 100 tiles plus waste.

Does the grout line size change the calculation?

Grout lines slightly reduce coverage, but the waste allowance absorbs it for standard layouts. For large-format tile with wide joints, add a few extra percent.
